Apologies if this has been asked before, looked everywhere and couldn't find an answer.
DN517, music. The test is 9th March.

Just a random question, is there points going for the entrance test, or what? It was 330 CAO points last year, which says it includes the interview.

So, does that mean the Leaving Cert. points are 330, or how much of the entrance test is points?

Or someone just set me straight and tell me exactly how it's broken down , I'm a tad bit confused..
Also, if anyone has any sample test papers from previous years to practise on, it'd be awesome! :)

    Thank you! :D

There's basically three parts to your application.

    1) A questionnaire to be filled in and brought to UCD on March 9th.
    2) The seated entrance exam that takes place on March 9th.
    3) Enough points in your Leaving Cert to cover the CAO points.

If the CAO points were 330 last year (seems unusually high for the BMus though..?), that means that a successful candidate would have:

    1) Achieved at least 330 in their Leaving Cert.
    2) Completed the questionnaire and entrance exam to a satisfactory level.
There are no CAO points awarded for the entrance exam; it's a separate thing.

The questionnaire and a sample exam paper can be downloaded (PDF format) from here:

It was 330 last year because theres only four people doing Bmus in first year now. ;)

Just a word for the wise for the OP because theres technically on ten places available for Bmus each year it depends on the points of the applicants... So if ten people apply for it and all ten get 600 points, well the points for Bmus will be 600.

As it stands I know that at least two of the first year Bmus students from this year got around 500, so just try do as well as possible becuase you never know who will apply/what you're up against! :)

Only 4 doing the course this year, wows.
Makes it look like I may not be up against much, or I wish..

But yep, I have the points already, well I'm over 330, aslong as it doesn't rise, I hope.

Yep only four doing Bmus this year, but theres also around 100 doing Music and another subject (BA) so its not like you're sitting in a class of four the whole time!

Points can fluctuate like mad (Speaking from personal experience here, my first choice points jumped by 70 points)... One thing to remember though, if you're worried about not getting enough points for Bmus which you will don't worry); should something mad happen like it did for me, you can do music and another subject as part of the BA for first year and then providing your music module results are decent enough you can switch to Bmus for 2nd and 3rd year!

Was there many applicants sitting the music exam last year, or any year? :)
Given that there was only 4 last year, I mean were the majority of applicants unsuccessful in the music entrance exam?

That's something to think about also, transferring into 2nd year bMus.. Hopefully it won't come to that! :P

    Another question too if you can answer it;

Basing my study around the sample paper online, should I prepare for anything else? :)

There'll often be 200-300 people sitting the exam; I'm sure many of them don't have BMus at UCD as their first choice.
