    NASA says communication has been restored to the International Space Station hours after it was lost.
    According to the space agency, flight controllers in Houston were updating software onboard the ISS' flight computers around 9:45 a.m. EST Tuesday when one of the station's data relay systems malfunctioned.
    The primary computer controlling critical station functions defaulted to a backup computer, which is not allowing the station to communicate with NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellites.

    Communication was finally restored at 12:34 p.m. EST.

    NASA said Mission Control in Houston was only able to communicate with the ISS crew as it flew over Russian ground stations before 11 a.m.
    The space agency said Expedition 34 Cmdr. Kevin Ford said the station's status was fine and the crew is doing well.
    Chris Hadfield, an astronaut on board the ISS, ironically sent out the following tweet Tuesday morning:
    "Good Morning, Earth! Today we transition the Space Station's main computers to a new software load. Nothing could possibly go wrong."
    Onboard the ISS is American Commander Kevin Ford, Russian Flight Engineer Oleg Novitskiy, Russian Flight Engineer Evgeny Tarelkin, American Flight Engineer Tom Marshburn, Canadian Flight Engineer Chris Hadfield and Russian Flight Engineer Roman Romanenko.
