Motor Tax Question

My car tax needs to be renewed within the month of February or according to the letter I won't be able to do it online any more (It's out since 31st January).

I get paid on 1st March. Are they really strict or is it a case of a computerised system and once it goes outside Feb it won't accept the pin any more? I really can't afford to pay this until my next pay cheque.

Apologies Mods if this is in the wrong Forum

If the pin goes out of date you can just apply for a new one online, and they just email it too you! I got a new pin from the motortax.ie website

You can pay up to 3 months arrears on the online site along with the renewal amount using the renewal pin.

After that its into the tax office.

You can tax it online if u have the chasis no. off the car, theres a section for taxing new cars

I got a new car 3 weeks ago and have since taxed it and then they sent me the renewal letter (which i didnt need anymore)

I taxed my husband vehicle online last sept I only got an e mail reminder that it is due 1 st march
We have not received a letter at all yet to say that tax is due with pin no on it
However the pin renewal is on d e mail
So I presume once u pay a few times online they send u your renewal via e mail
    Obviously trying to cut expenses

You can pay with a credit card (a family member's, for example) and repay them when you're paid. I paid the tax on my wife's car the other day with my CC, and she's going to pay me back any day now (...yeah, right :)). Save yourself having to pay any arrears by paying it this way.

Yep, paid for my tax last week using the online system..

.. tax was out since the end of start of January, so they just charged me a month arrears and taxed it for an extra month.

its not a brand new car. Does that make a difference?

You can request a pin retrieval on the motortax.ie pin retrieval page, and do it that way. You just need car reg and your address, email etc.

Thanks for the help everyone. Slightly confused by the mention of arrears though. I pay in 3 month sections so if I pay on the 1st of March I'll be taxing the car for Feb, Mar and April. Or do I pay an extra month as a fine?

One month arrears (Feb) plus 3 months tax.

    Rates are here - https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/menu.do?page=motortaxrates

Ok, so I'll have to pay €79 arrears for Feb (which ironically is cheaper than if I paid it normally) and €268 for March, April and May.

    Yep. You can't back date a tax-disc.

If you go into the tax office to pay arrears they'll probably look at you like you have two heads, and tell you that you can get it stamped (off road declaration) at local Garda station.

Great, thanks for the help. Good to know I can do it in March. Don't mind paying the arrears and wouldn't get it declared off the road when it wasn't.

No that doesnt matter, it will go on when the logbook was changed into your name. You wont need to pay the arrears either! the tax on my new car (not brand new) was up in December I only had to pay the tax for Feb,March and April cause it was only registered to me in Feb, all done online!

So once the logbook is in your name you can do it all online
Hope this isnt too confusing haha:)
