There is a russian movie called "Bumer", ( Beemer ), which is basicly about 4 Russian gangsters with a stolen e38. Great movie. Made e38 even more popular in eastern europe back then.

E38 is still on my list of "cars to own, before i die" list.

It is on my "The car I have to get after I finish college" list.

And I've seen that movie. While it's not a hollywood production, it was enjoyable to watch.

It was not even near Hollywood budget to start with, but it was quite a good reflection of how you had to live in eastern europe back then. Some parts in Movie where quite "stupid", like getting 2 Tyres punctured and they replaced only one tyre after, but it is still a good movie.

Didn't that guy fix the second one? It's been a while since I watched it.

I bought a 740i last weekend and its (back on) the original 16" balloon tyres. Seriously needs bigger wheels and lowering but oh so nice to drive. I will change the wheels but Id only lower with coilovers (as opposed just swapping springs) which is a bit pricey for the value of these cars now.

Super clean engine bay and super smooth engine:

Murphy and Gunn BMW original Irish car, facelift model, 126k miles. Repainted the black lower plastic trim bumpers and sideskirts to silver yesterday, looks much cleaner.

The people demand more pictures! :)

One of my all time favourite cars, and so much better than it's successor I find it hard to fathom sometimes.

I could only dream of running one to be honest. Have to make do with my E46 for the moment.

Sure is! I got tired I referring you guys to purchase it and just bought it myself. :pac: It is indeed in the excellent condition he stated.

For now, I have no good photos and the 16"ers do the E38 no justice at all.

I wouldn't mind buying the car if tax and insurance weren't an issue :)

Ireland really is a young car enthusiast's nightmare.

Ireland really is a young car enthusiast's nightmare.

Insurance cost me precisely zero as they counted it as a classic and I removed the Merc from the policy. The Merc was only EUR80 per annum to insure to begin with. The guy I sold the Merc to insured its as his "first classic" for EUR350 full comp. Each classic you add goes down in cost dramatically. First Ireland (Broker) is where you need to go for insuring big engined or classics.

So all you have to contend with is Tax and fuel (I might LPG it pending my own personal plans).

I'm 19. Can't get classic insurance until next year :( I might consider something like an E30 or an E34 then.

Nice to have my handiwork appreciated. I see you got a K&N in there fairly sharpish!

You have the clear lights on order I hope? I didn't put clears on because I couldn't afford proper paint, and IMHO they need to look '00 or '01; ne'er the twain shall meet! :)

Great car, loved it even when it was costing me money. Hated seeing it go, but delighted to see it go to a good home.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

I could only dream of running one to be honest.

You'd be surprised these aren't as expensive to own as you'd think!

Had mine ('96 735 V8) from when it was 7 years old until it was 12 years old. 110k miles until 145k miles

Apart from normal wear & tear and standard servicing by my trusted BMW indie, the only serious repair I had was for about €1k for a suspension overhaul at 140k miles.

Tax is of course a bummer, but insurance is relatively cheap as these cars are the opposite of what boy racers tend to crash in their spare time :D

Agree 100%. The tax is a b*tch but if you don't do big miles or you want to do leisure trips in serious comfort, it's well worth taking the risk on possible problems; and the risk of those problems is lessened if you do your research and buy the right car. Mine was a little older and didn't have all the fancy doodads, for example, but it had obviously been minded.

I couldn't recommend the 740i enough, it had more punch than the 735i I test drove, and while BMW's straight sizes are second to none, my (beloved) 525i wasn't a patch on the sheer joy I got out of flooring the 740i. Watching people's faces was almost as much fun as the sound and the pull, because people expect 7s to pootle along sedately. :)

I'm very likely to have another one in the shape of a 750iL, but I'm happy to wait for the right one. I've a long way to go before I get bored of the replacement anyway...
