    Well what would you have us talk about?

    Well, um... maybe the reasons why we are so completely useless at playing tennis... specially compared to our golfing prowess.

    I believe you will find a separate thread for just that. Right below this one in fact.

    What happened with the Finland guys not turning up on the last day? Only caught a snippet of it on the news.

    Finland refused to play the last match since they had the tie already won, 3-1. Under the Davis Cup rules, all matches should be played but the Finns claimed that their players were unfit to play. However, according to the Irish Times, the only player with a valid injury was Jarko Nieminen.

    Tennis is a sport that requires huge skill and fitness .

    <snip - no need for slagging golf>

    This thread is for discussing Irish competitive tennis, such as the Davis Cup. The 'Tennis in Ireland' thread is about what can be done to get more people involved in the sport and the reasons why it isn't popular here.

    Mod Note:No need to insult other sports, the_monkey.

    It's a small country, it's a costly sport to play at the elite level. Kids who play at elite underage levels here do a full education too. Often they go through the US Uni system and never come out of that to the pro ranks or maybe see tennis on the way up as a way to get that kind of education only.
    In the last 15 years the players who have done well on tour seem to have matured late in their career. Look at Great Britain for all the resources they put into tennis, the publicity and enormity of Wimbledon and it's taken that long to get a Grand Slam winner.

    Look at the size of the USA, the multitude of academies there and they struggle to have competitive male players for some time now.

    .

    On the flipside of that.. Serbia isn't much bigger than Ireland and certainly isn't richer, yet they've produced three world #1's in the last five years.
