    HI,
I am a newly converted iMac owner and I have been searching for an OS X equivalent of Notepad++ that I had on my old windows pc.

    Can anyone make any recommendations?

Check out Text Wrangler and TextMate.

I recently moved from Notepad++ to Sublime Text in Windows. It's available for Mac too.
There's a course on how to use it here.
    https://tutsplus.com/course/improve-workflow-in-sublime-text-2/

It's not free but the shareware version seems to do everything.
It might be overkill for you but it's no harm having a look at it.

Hard to beat vim for getting things done.

Sublime is great (it has a vim mode that you need to turn on in settings:- "vintage_start_in_command_mode": true), v3 is in beta at the moment

is vim an upgraded version of the unix vi editor?
(i hated vi, but it was the best there was. it was great once you learned all of the commands)
