I have dismantled a few of these lately, and they look to be non factory converted, the rear load deck is built from box iron with a galvanised sheet cut to fit over it. The spare wheel cover is plastic square with a sticker from an Irish manufacturer whos name escapes me at the moment. Anyone know who did them originally?
It was a tax dodge when the were new i take it to have this work done?

MIGHT have been ParFit out at the airport - they did a lot of conversions. Re-converted a Fiesta van one time, factory van conversion, about 100 spot welds around rear window filler panel and the floor was a b*tch to remove :mad::mad:

I'd call it avoidance, rather than dodge.

What you can assume is that the import duty was less for commercial vehicles. (Just like the VRT now)

It wasn't that long after production of sunny and cherries stopped on the Nass rd premises ( now agnelli fiat) so I'd say they did it themselves, with old sheet metal workers called back in because there was a hell of a lot of them done.

Sure they still do it with the Fiesta / Focus vans
AND, AFIK, they don't have to have NCT or DOE done, as they fall between the cracks

I've seen some 'Irish' conversions rust tho', where the factory jobs got the full rust treatment ;)

Indeed, the latest one i picked up was in a sad state because it was never tested.
That loophole is now closed though now i think?

Yeah its closed now, They do need a DOE.
Although some people still say they're exempt on DoneDeal ads, they're incorrect. :)

I too recall converting a 1985 Fiesta van (beige, 'IR' reg) back in the mid-1990's. The conversion was indeed a factory-conversion with 100+ spot welds per window panel. The van I converted was mint and the conversion worked out very well....I wonder is she still 'alive'?? :)
(reg was 'nnnn IR'...have it written down somewhere)
