Cheaper HD from SKY

Not sure if this has been shared on here already

Since we launched HD in 2006, viewing in high-definition has been a huge hit with Sky customers.

Today, more than 4.5 million of our customers take HD from Sky. This number continues to grow strongly, with around half a million customers taking HD in the last year alone.

Despite this strong growth, we know that some customers who just take an entertainment TV pack from Sky feel that that they wouldn’t get full value from the existing £10.25 HD pack, which also includes access to HD versions of sports and movies channels. To help them benefit from HD picture and sound quality, we’re making HD more accessible with a new TV pack tailored around their needs.

Available alongside our existing TV packs Entertainment and Entertainment Extra, the brand new pack - called Entertainment Extra+ - will offer customers access to more than 45 HD channels. The pack offers a number of popular entertainment channels including ITV2, MTV, Sky 1, Sky Atlantic, Sky Living, Sky Arts, Discovery and Fox, all in HD.

As well as the 45 HD channels, the pack will also offer customers access to a wide range of TV box sets on demand, both on the Sky+HD box and through the award-winning Sky Go. Box sets that customers will be able to enjoy at home and on the move include Game of Thrones, An Idiot Abroad and Trollied. On top of this, Sky customers with the new pack and a 3D TV will even be able to sample entertainment shows on Sky 3D, including the documentaries Galapagos with David Attenborough and Inside the Mind of Leonardo, featuring the actor Peter Capaldi.

Available from £31.50 a month, the new pack will be available to Sky customers from April.

    €35 a month includes 34 HD channels

Does that mean the HD sub is finally gone?

    Wishful thinking:

Not sure why you quoted those links - Offer does not take off until April, so the links you quoted have no information on what I posted... Id say it will be something like 7 euro extra for HD if you have Sky Entertainment Extra... but can't see any prices for Ireland so far...

    It's still a rip off

    You're right John - was a worthless post - duly deleted! :)

My biggest gripe with the whole HD charge is that, if you are already paying €33 for sports, you should at least get the sports in HD and not have to pay the extra €15 to get the same channels in HD.

I got a call from sky last Friday offering me an upgrade to HD for €5 a month.

I was told that it will go back to €15 at the end of the 12 months.

I took the offer and will go back to standard once the 12 months is over.

I do think that HD is worth an extra fiver a month. It isn't worth any more though. If it cost a tenner i wouldn't have went for the upgrade

€35 a month for Entertainment Extra, which includes 34 HD channels, sounds very good to me. I am currently ( since Feb 1 ) paying €29 a month for the old package of three mixes, entertainment, news and docs and there are no HD channels in it, other than the free ones, like Rte2 HD and BBC HD. €6 a month to go HD or am I missing something ?

I wonder if they have any intention of dropping the formula1 as part of hd pack. Very good value if it remains.

That looks to be the plan. Also going to rename the channel to Sky Sports Speed.
In addition there are changes to who can or cannot view the F1 Channel. If you already subscribe to the HD Pack, then you will be unaffected. Any new customers will need to subscribe to the Sky Sports Pack.

Looks like they are also launching a new feature called Shared Planner. If you have 2 boxes in your house, you can share the recordings with each other.

So I assume taking up hd right now is critical if interested in f1 as they would have to leave the f1 if you were ib before the new packages?

I don't have HD myself, but if this new offer did not tie me into a new contract I would go for it for a month or so - see if it's worth it. I think it should be free personally, when you consider all the price increases of the past, or at least free to Movie&sports people, but I suppose this thread is about the new offer and it is a step up from what was on offer previously.

Trust me, if you go HD, you won't go back. Picture quality over SD is fantastic and even crap programming looks more interesting in HD.

The new entertainment extra for existing customers still charges €15 for the HD ,

Just rang up there and got it for half price and two multi room subs for free for the next 12 months !

I wonder if changing to speed they might branch out and include other racing apart from F1? I'd love if they got the rights to the WRC.

I think that's what they are going to aim for..Defo going to include other motorsports I'd say.

I suspect this is a move by Sky to try and phase out SD receivers .
They are trialing a new pairing system for HD receivers at the moment .
It only works on the newer HD boxes so I'd imagine that they will roll these out.

got HD package for free myself last week, took up all channels except movies, existing customer, had my account suspended for the last 6 months and 5 of 6 of those months were paid for with credit given to me by sky so sometimes they are value

I had a half price HD subscription up till the end of Dec 2012. It was due to go to the full price in Jan, but I gave the months notice at the start of Dec to cancel it. No effort by the rep to keep my business, so I let the HD go.

Anyway, got a call from Sky today offering a HD sub for €5 / month for 12 months, but no contract so I can cancel at any time. So I signed up, mainly for the F1 coverage, but it's great to have the discovery channels etc back in HD.

So that's the entertainment extra pack with HD for €38. Happy enough with that. Definitely wouldn't pay any more tho...

Can you tell me what pairing system means and could this have a bearing on the card trick?

I imagine that they can change it whenever they want. I am sure it is in the terms and conditions.

    From Digital Spy:
    Entertainment Extra +

This new pack is aimed at people who have not yet chosen to join HD because they don't see value in paying the same HD price £10.25 for Sports/Movies they don't subscribe to. Once you join this pack, you will also get access to 3D content that mirrors your new package.

    Q&A …
Q: Does this change affect me if I don’t switch and already subscribe to Sky.
A: No, everything will stay the same

Q: How do I get access to the 3D content
A: You need to subscribe to Entertainment Extra +

Q: Why can’t I get 3D with Entertainment or Entertainment Extra
A: 3D requires an HD subscription

Q: Can I subscribe to just Sports/Movies with Entertainment Extra+ and watch 3D content
A: Yes, you no longer need to subscribe to Sky World HD to get 3D

Q: Is there more 3D content coming
A: Yes, we are looking to provide more content

Q: Existing customer – box sets – what will happen
A: Nothing, everything will stay the same, unless you voluntarily choose to change package

Q: New customer – box sets – what will happen
A: You need Entertainment Extra + for this service. You will however be able to use catch up, sky+ functions ie recording, series link, remote record and other services like never miss if you subscribe to Entertainment/Extra

Q: F1 is moving to Sky Sports, is this correct
A: For new customers to Sky or existing customer’s upgrading, that’s right. Existing customers will not be affected, unless they wish to change their subscription

Q: Should I feel disadvantaged because I need to pay £5.25 extra for Sports/Movies in HD
A: No, as you will be able to watch Sports/Movies in HD as you always have. These changes are about making HD more accessible for all customer’s, depending on their interests

Q: Are there plans to reward Sky World HD customers or make further changes
A: There is no information available on this

Good news for anyone with a 3d tv-no need to get SkyWorld to have access to 3d content (I reckon that some content that people aren't subscribed to will be blocked)

Thats interesting about it going back up to 15 a month after 12 months.
I was offered it for 5 a month and i can cancel at an any time, no mention of 15 a month at any time
