Balancing Hot Water Cylinder

Just after getting in a new hot water cylinder however it didn't seem to be heating from the gas boiler. Playing about with it for a while I figured out the balancing valve was fully closed.

The question I have is how much should it be open, I was kind of thinking open as little as possible for the water to still be hot on the return is this about right, and also how critical is it to get it right.

Another question I have is the hot feed into the coil is the bottom one and the return is the top, I'd always thought the hot should be at top and when I googled some diagrams the hot feed always goes in the top too, just kind of curious if anyone has any insight into this also.

Is it labelled on the cyclinder that the flow is on the bottom ?

    No labels on cylinder no.

The way I figured out it was flowing like that was from the progress of the heat, when its switched on can feel the heat striaght away at the bottom of coil and takes a bit longer before heat gets to the top of coil.

It's probably been like that from day 1 I'd say and the guy who changed the cyclinder probably didn't confirm the flow and return. He probably assumed they were the right way around

Id start with a half turn open. If you dont have enough hot water keep opening in quarters untill satisfactory
