53/39 on compact crank?

Poking around on t'interweb, I found these stronglight ct2 chainrings for 110mm bcd spiders, and they come in all sizes from 34t to 53t.

I've been toying with the idea of changing my 5750 50/34 chainset for a 5700 53/39 chainset for a few weeks now, but this might also be an option.

Can anyone comment on the benefit of switching to a 130mm bcd full double over using 53/39 chainrings on a 110mm bcd compact? Or is there any noticable difference at all?

Haven't used 110mm standard rings myself, but I'd imagine there would be more flex versus 130mm bcd.

Whether this flex would either be large enough to be noticed is something that someone with such a setup would have to comment on.

I did this conversion with these Controltech chainrings from CRC.
I was concerned about flex, but didn't notice any to speak of.

    I switched from a 11-23 with the compact to a 12-25 on the 53 x 39.
At the top end the 50 x 11 top gear of the compact was actually a slightly bigger gear that 53 x 12, but it's so close to be unnoticable.
Also, being more of a roleur than a spinner, I found I use the 39 a lot more in races than I ever did the 34.

A worthwhile conversion, especially if you don't want to fork out for a complete new chainset.

I also had to get a new chain as the one on the compact chainset was a little short for the 53 x 23 / 53 x 25.

way to go colm i reckon you will save a bundle on buying a new crankset , 53 is to big tho, 52x39 is spot on or even a 42 inner but your the pilot sure you know your own strenghts.

Cheers lads, the potential for flex was what I was worried about alright, but then I probably don't put out enough power to have to worry about that
