    hi guys

    looking for my 1st diesel,
    year 2007+,
4 door hatch or saloons considered.
    any suggestions?

looking at an s40 at the minute
thoughts have been around Leons, bravos, but cant think of much else.
never owned a saloon but some of them look nice and seem to be of ok quality.

S40 and Bravo might seem good value but from past experience they are a nightmare when something goes wrong, which I can nearly guarantee it will. Alfas are even worse again on reliability but a cracking car to drive.

I would suggest something on the lines of Toyota and Mazda. VW, SEAT and Skoda have all the same parts and engines so the Leon wouldn't be a bad choice. 1.9Tdi is a good work horse but the 1.6TDI has a nicer sound.

try for the Toyota/Mazda first then look for the Seat. Don't spend as much on the Mazda or SEAT and check DPF is in good shape.

    I'd love that, I have the 1.9.

Just fyi, that car will only do 45mpg if another car is towing it ;)
Expect 35mpg, 40 if you are super careful.

If i had 8.5k and was looking for a 2007 a bravo wouldn't even enter my mind, then again i doubt a diesel would in general

Octavia vrs would be my choice here .07 or a 08 model . Excellent car 170bhp from the diesel engine an sexy interior

You should get a good Ford Mondeo for that money. I also spotted a Jag x type on Donedeal over the weekend for that money

Would've thought you'd struggle to get a famine spec Octavia tdi 08 for that money

Mondeos seem pretty cheap - in comparison to audis skodas etc
    Are they any good?
Would a diesel FOCUS be better - cheaper as in lighter, same engines as mondeo??
Dont have a family or anything to necessitate a massive car, my requirements are, decent looking, nice interior but also im considering bootsizes, some saloons have huge boots but hatchbacks are still in, maybe even decent smaller jeeps for carrying gear in (surfing camping diving etc)
