Claiming back more than you paid

    Just a quick one and Im sure its very obvious but can you claim back more tax than you have paid.

    Generally no, unless there is a specific provision for this.

    We claimed for incapacited child tax credits and what we received was a lot less that what we had expected, hadnt factored in what I had paid at all.

    If in a few years time my wife rejoins the workforce can we get the claim backdated again

    Afraid not - the credit can only offset tax paid in any given year- and anything unclaimed can not be carried forward
