Parents who just don't seem bothered with their kids

I'm a parent myself to two wonderful girls aged 11 months and 5 years old, myself and the wife try and spend as much time with them as possible dispite being young ourselves. I'm 28 and my wife is 26.

I have few friends who also have kids, but they seem to take any opportunity to drop the kids with anyone who will take them for nearly any reason. I do understand that people need to get out without kids to let off steam and such but for a child to spend a whole weekend nearly every weekend with their grandparents is a bit much.

To me it seems they treat their kids as a job, delt with during the weekdays with weekends off. Is it just me or are these parents being selfish by just not being all that bothered with their kids? Or

What has your age got to do with it? you were old enough to make them you are old enough to look after them.

Everyone needs some time alone away from the kids, this does not make you a bad/selfish parent.

I know everyone needs time away, but nearly every weekend dumping your children on someone else while you go off for the day to me just doesn't seem right, I do go out or away for the weekend myself but not all the time.

It seems to me most people I know that will do this with their kids are about my age or younger

I agree every weekend is not great but maybe the people who are minding them want too mind them.
Parents who are working need some time to chill as well, it's good for kids to have other people in their lives.
If they were staying with gandparents or aunt/uncles would you think it was just as wrong?

I know SEVERAL people like this, any chance to get rid of them.
In fairness most of these people can't stand their own children.

As the old saying goes "Kids are like farts, you can just about stand your own"

Going off for the day does not constitute a whole weekend. Its likely they might work during the week and have errands to do at the weekends which is easier without the screamers.

    Everyone parents differently.

Unless you suspect child abuse or negligence, I suggest you focus on your own parenting and leave the parenting of other people's children to them.

Well it's hardly parenting if they dump them off anyone that will have them be they grandparents, aunts, uncles or other any time they can.
I know it is easier to get things done with no children present, but daytime piss ups aren't really anything a proper parent does.

You never mentioned this was the reason the kids are dumped every weekend.

I would not like to see any parent do this to a child on a regular basics and the people who are allowing it happen as just as bad imo.

Research indicates that children benefit immeasurably from exposure to a range of adult role models and full engagement with their extended families. It's entirely possible that people who facilitate this are parenting better than you are.

If you suspect this, you should be reporting the parents to the authorities for negligence.

Quelle surprise. Another loaded OP and the additional information and REAL reason for the OP only trickles out later in the thread.

Is there any further pertinent information you'd like to get out now while the thread is still in it's infancy, or would you rather continue casting aspertions based on stereotypical and anecdotal evidence?

I was wondering when we'd get around to why you'd think it was any of your business.

I'm one of those kids who were dropped of with grandparents etc every single time there was no school, so weekends and holidays.

Believe me, it's not nice for any kid. Children are able to pick up when they are not wanted.

As an adult, i now know that the reason for this was because my parents just couldn't be bothered with us under their feet. It's not very nice.

Depends on the individual situations but I think it's wrong if parents are constantly looking for a way to get out of spending time with their children. There seems to be plenty of them about.

I was left with relatives at every available opportunity. No neglect, drink or drugs involved or anything but it was obvious I was not wanted around. In my case I think my father didn't want the hassle and was completely uninterested and my mother couldn't cope and wasn't able.
