Samsung P500

Hoping someone might be able to help me.

I've got a samsung P500, I know it's an old one but I got it 2nd hand 2 years ago. It had been running okish for the first year but for the last 9 months it's been nothing but trouble, randomly blue-screening.

Also there are 2 memory slots but one is only able to read a maximum of 750mb no matter the size of the memory module used, well I've tried with 1gb and 2gb.

It has windows xp pro installed and I was thinking if I did a full reinstall of the o/s that this might cure it.

However the problem is I only have a recovery disk for regular xp (I think it's SP1), will this suffice and the fact that I have the xp pro license number mean that the updates will correct it to xp pro. Although I think I'm being a bit naive asking that last question.

Also given the blue screen issues is it even worth it, should I just consine it to the IT recycling yard?

    Many Thanks

    Martin

If you have a Windows XP Pro SP1 CD then you can easily Slipstream Service Pack 3 into Your Windows XP Installation CD.

If you don't have a CD, you can make one from the installation source: How to Create a Windows XP CD From a I386 Folder

Thanks I'll give the latter a go and report back as to how I go.

I downloaded a piece of software called HDDLife and it's saying that there is a health issue with the HDD re Reallocated Sector Count?

Is there anyway to fix these bad blocks or am I better off getting a new HDD?

the reviews on that software are very mixed - some mention errors coming up on brand new drives . to be sure download the iso of ubcd and burn the image to a cd using infrarecorder or some similar software if u have it . then boot from the cd and it will load a menu - go into hdd - diagnostics - down at the very bottom you will find vivard - run the scan and this should tell u if there is something up with the drive - if there is,then best getting a new one - you could go for a solid state (just to be sure , check if the system is compatable before if you do) or you could get a basic replacement for around 50 yo yos on dabs

keep in mind this machine has been causing u grief all along. if you put in a new hd it may not fix the problems so you should ask yourself first do u think it's worth putting the time and money into it ... if you are like me though u will try and fix it :)

....memtest for ram diagnostics is also on ubcd

also you could run a linux os which you can boot also from a cd (no harddrive needed) to see how the system behaves ...there is a linux os on ubcd when partedmagic is loaded afaik
