Hi this is a question I would love to know the answer to . Car currently has 180,000 miles on it . It's going well and very well looked after . It just passed nct . I had it serviced the other day , oil and filters change .It's a uk import . I have most of the history of it . Although the mileage is very high I'm wondering whether it's worth spending any more money on as is there a certain mileage it can only go as far as ? would like to hear your opinions please thanks .

As long as its running well not burning oil or using water don't worry..diesels that are well looked after can see 250k easy and the Germans build a nice solid car .has it cost you much to date maintenance not including servicing?

I've seen some clocked E46s for sale in Poland that had over 600k kms when imported.

Ive seen a few of them op that eat money around 150k miles. Still no reason to think yours isnt good for many thousand more miles.

I'd say Ive spent about 500 ish on getting it fixed up since I bought it . (in a year ) There was a good lot to do on it so it's good to know there's life in it yet ! no not burning oil or water so far anyway , engine seems good I've just had to replace the power steering pump and pulley so far .

Car currently has 180 miles on it .
That is only delivery mileage. Years of reliable motoring still left in her ;).

Thanks . It's good to hear people's opinion on this . So 180,000 miles is not mad mileage for 03 ? when I looked around at other 03's this mileage seemed very high in comparison .

    10 years old / 18000 a yr.....only average for a diesel.:)

Rough driving / constant stop start, constant short distances and no maintenance will kill a car. Regular varied driving and correct oils etc, service schedule adhered to, a car can last to enormous mileage. Know of an 07 vag 1.9 pd tdi at 500000km with the above treatment.

Agree though that you can be hit with some very large bills by a pump / injector failure, dmf or a combination of these and a timing belt service falling due. Suppose its the nature of modern diesels as they age.

Prompt and correct servicing can do wonders for modern diesels. While some faults of modern diesels are purely down to the way they're used (DPFs and DMFs simply don't take kindly to stop-start and/or low speed urban driving), and really people doing shorter distance driving would be much better off with a petrol, a LOT of problems with modern diesels are down to maintenance, or rather the lack of it from the average Irish motorist.

Another problem with modern diesels is the absolutely absurd service intervals that some manufacturers now allow on their diesels, there is NO WAY a diesel should be going as much as 20,000 miles or 2 years without a service, yet many diesels (especially German ones) allow this, which is absolutely crazy. Oil should be changed at least every 12,000 miles or once a year, 'long life' oil or not. Oil is the lifeblood of an engine, so it is essential the the oil in a car is high quality and changed reasonably frequently.

If that car were mine, I would ignore what the variable servicing interval display on the car is telling you, and get it serviced at least every 10,000 miles, or once a year (whichever is the most frequent). While it would be foolish to make guarantees, at least you will have done as much as you can to minimise the chances of the engine giving you expensive trouble.

Yes the last service was done 10,000 miles ago . I agree that by getting it serviced regularly you are doing the best you can to keep the engine going well . Then anything else that goes wrong is out of your hands . Whilst I do a lot of short spins or city driving , I also do a lot of cross country driving most weekends .

Oil changing @ 10,000 miles stretching it for any diesel... but as capatinspeed stated servicing all important & especially for stop start city driving it can take quite a while for a diesel to reach operating temp....

What do you reccomend ? If 10,000 miles is strectching it , maybe every 8,000?

180,000kms is about half way to the moon, or 4.5 laps of the earth. It's quite a lot of leg.

How long is a piece of string? when a car manufacturer recommends oil changes it's under ideal conditions (& whats ideal conditions driving 80km all day on a motorway with one person in the car?) now most of Mondeo Avensis & Passats's start their life in conditions close to this (Rep's driving all day up & down the country on their own) then punters like us take over with loads of short stop start city driving journeys with engine never warming up to full temp! So to try an answer your question I change oil on my motor at half manuf recommended (1500km about 10,000miles) which is every 5000 or so miles... maybe too often? but intend to keep car a long time!!:o
