This painting is coming up for sale at auction next week and I have to write a piece about it for a blog - what do Boardsies think of it? I'm interested in the opinion of the man/woman in the street on Boards before I launch into writing the piece. I'll post some more details/guide price etc. once I get some feedback. Enjoy. :D

It's not bad but four year olds aren't much good at keeping inside the lines.
If the artist was any older it's awful.

I'm the first to admit I don't know much about art. But I know what I like and this isn't it. I wouldn't hang it in my house

There is no possible way that this so-called painting is art. Someone is taking the piss big time.

Art works in peculiar ways .....

The Emperor's New Clothes comes to mind when I see this drivel.

Of course you would be rubbished as ignorant if you cant see the importance of a Sean Scully.
But in reality I would love to see somebody call 'bull****' on the whole abstract art thing.

I remember once showing an art critic an abstract art painting and after letting her see it at a glance I engaged a brief conversation that went like this :

ME: look at this one .... Do you like it ?

HER: who is it by ?

ME: Well regardless of artist, do you like it ?

HER: well who is it by first ?

ME: Well maybe we should look at this piece as a painting instead of a brand label.
If I told you it was a Tony o'Malley then you'd like it .....but if I told you it was by an unknown then you wouldnt like it.

    HER: hmmmmmmm

i think you could easily write about this in a serious way, its art and imo it can be viewed as taking the p1ss,true, but also looked at it critically its perfectly plausable as art, and easily talked about in context of style.

    Has it got a title?

I admit that I know nothing about art, but that piece makes me feel really uncomfortable.

I'm struggling to see passed the misalignment on the left hand side.

    A better title would've been.

Not quite right if you get my angle.

Everybody sitting down because it has a price too! Morgan O'Driscoll are selling the painting " Yellow Figure" at their sale in the Clyde Court Hotel tomorrow. They are guiding it at an outrageous €30,000 - €50,000. To me, it looks like a poorly executed piece of primary school art that would be tut tutted at by teacher for being carelessly completed - the student couldn't wait to get out of class to the playground. I live in the hope that one day this sort of rubbish will really burn those that invest in it in much the same way as the property crash caught the good and the great. :D

To be fair I think it is very interesting, if I bought it I could spend many hours gasping at it over my fireplace, enjoying a glass of wine while pondering wtf did I just spend 30-50k on?

    €50 k?

    Jaysus!

    I'll take two.

Here's three random "modern" paintings - tell me if you think they are ART or not:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,549 ✭✭✭✭Judgement Day

The first one and the last one are rubbish and the middle one looks like something that might win a prize in a primary school art competition.

The sale was only at 6pm this evening and it will probably be a day or two before the results are online - I'll post details as soon as I hear anything.

Well, it sold and below the lower end of the guide price but still for an outrageous €28,000! I'm remain convinced that someday the art lovers investors who buy this sort of rubbish are going to get badly burnt.

There was an interesting thread on Masterpiece: Ireland's Favourite Painting - 17/04/12 - RTE 1 @ 10:15pm and I managed another attack on my favourite artist (?) http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=78190827&postcount=91

In fairness the one that sold for €28,000 showed a bit more creativity.

What I really like was the pic below done by youngest son in Junior Infants, and which I posted in the thread attributing it to Scully and nobody twigged it! :D

A lot of the lots seem to have gone for under their low estimate; Lot 23 was interesting: The Conservatory, est 4-6K went for €3500.

There still seems to be money out there though! Happy days :)

I've noticed that in a lot of recent art sales it's only the top flight stuff that is selling at, or above, the reserve price. A huge amount of cheaper stuff just isn't selling.

of the three you put up together, i think the third one is pretty cool, first one is interesting and the second one is a joke. i could do that easy enough

do you have a price tag for them

People with too much money buy a name not a painting. Whatever happened to beauty. ?
