This is probably not the right forum, but... have just been threatened, and had my kids frightened by a tradesman this eve, who was supposed to sand and paint wooden Rationale windows, but just painted them. I spotted this and asked two other painters to have a look - not mentioning that I had recently had them done - and both said they had just been painted over and not sanded back at all, so would continue to rot underneath. My question: What is wrong with some men when they deal with a woman on her own - do they just think they can con and bully? I am hopping mad now!!

How much did he charge? Did you pay him yet?
And what do you want to happen now?

Hi! Tony, it was e280. There were 3 windows. It took him a morning, which I found strange. I haven't paid him yet as I wasn't there the afternnon he finished the jopb, and my cousin spotted the windows two days later, and pointed out to be that they hadn't been sanded, but just painted over. I then had two painters come along, and they said that the windows had just been painted over. One of them gave me a quote for e280 to redo windows, and sand them back, and put on 3 coats of varnish.

The guy offered to come back and look at the windows, but he wouldn't agree to resand them back. He finally admitted that he had only sanded off the surface rough bits.

I just want him to leave us alone now, and to get someone else to do a propper job on the windows.

Was in a similar situation - threaten him with gaurds if he threatens you. give him the option of doing the job correctly or you will engage another tradesman. Be mindful he could take ypu to small claims court so try and iron out a deal but do everything by text to ensure ypu have proof of offer for him to redo job correctly.

Report him to the guards if he threatened you.
I don't think you should pay him as he didn't do the agreed work and actually did damage.

Hi! Tony81 and Ladysarah, thanks for your replies. I am probably just going to pay him. I don't want our gate kicked again, and him blocking the entrance to my property with his car, throwing stones up at window, standing across from my property and sending me texts to say that he can see me inside. I'm just a bit sick of tradesmen thinking that they can do a bad job because I am a woman on my own, and that I will never know the difference!

If you don't report him to the guards, you are letting him get away with it.

He will do this again, and maybe he's next Customer will not be as lucky as him just kicking there gate.

    He sounds like a psycho!

So you are going to reward his behaviour by paying him. Go to the Guards tell them what he is doing, show them the texts he has sent you.

This is nothing to do with him being a bad tradesman. It's about him being a bully and you should stand up to him and don't let him treat you like that.

He can't take her to the small claims court as she is an individual.

OP as others have said, you're letting him away with his behaviour if you pay him, and what's stopping him doing the same to others? The first thing you should do is be on to the police about him.

    Hannaho,
While I am sympathetic to your problem, unless you are actually looking for advice from other posters on where to go next and how to deal with this man, then you were right in your first line of your original post, and Personal Issues is not the Forum for you.

This is a Forum for seeking and offering advice.

If you just want a rant, you need to find another outlet.

If you are going to ignore all the advice offered, then there is not much point in allowing the thread to continue.

Can you please clarify if you want advice or a rant!

    Thanks,
    Big Bag of Chips.

Don't pay him - as someone whose got family in the trade, has worked every summer and who has had a similar experience if you decide not to pay him there's basically nothing he can do about it.

Tell him he'll be payed if he redoes the windows inc sanding it properly beforehand. Otherwise tell him to get stuffed. If he threatens you even slightly call the cops straight away, even just to have it on record.

Also, I don't know the size of your windows but that seems excessive price wise. It'd take me about a day to sand and paint (primer and top coat, possible a 2nd top coat depending on paint, underlying color etc) 3 average size windows inside and out when you allow for drying time between coats - and I'm a student whose just worked summers, not a full time professional

Doesn't sound like a licensed contractor. There are cases where you can lose your license for negligent work, and that puts you out of work. Always deal with someone who is licensed wherever you can, they're far more inclined to stand behind the job. Failure to do so can result in the loss of their business license, forcing them into strictly under the table work. I'm sure Labor/Chamber of Commerce would love to hear about this guy, either way: to collect back taxes, or to suspend his license. He might counter with a lien to get you to pay him, but he'd be an idiot to try.
