Hoarding verses stealing

We have a long tradition of being prepared here. Preparing weapons, food and other supplies.

The problem with hoarding is it costs you money, it costs you space and would make you a target.

I think long term survival will depend on a community that can take care of itself. Like any ancient city just about everything is produced in house. It will take a while to form so between the outbreak and the set up of a city state there will be a period where you could be on your own.

The work required to become sufficient I think is beyond most individuals. It'll be a waste of time for any one of us to try and survive on our own by producing your own goods.

You will have some weeks where you can survive on what food was produced before the outbreak, shops will be easy to scavenge. I think when it comes to tools and such it's as easy to scavenge them after society has collapsed.

Ultimately the survivors are going to be the ones that can create an old school fortified town just like we had when Ireland was a barbarian backwater.

So, do you think it's worth preparing? Or is it a much better option to find what you need in the pandemonium and move in next door to a preper just kill him and take all his stuff? Or you could become his friend too I guess.

good point. however I would be aiming for something more along the Norman model, central fortified castle where supplies can be stockpiled and a series of agragarian satellite villages, once the basics such as food production, sanitation, defence construction, governance are streamlined in the first few years then we can move on to other schemes such as engineering projects, education, expansion, arts etc

This thread made me think of ring forts, motte and baileys, and raths

Generally i think hoarding is a better idea, stealing will easily put you in a position where as there is no law, you are as susceptible to being killed if you're caught as you are by hoarding.

The trick to both is stealth, how good are you at stealing? Good enough to keep yourself alive? If the answer is not very good, then you should be hoarding like a squirrel in summertime! :)

Do you really think preppers haven't thought about people trying to steal from them?

Be prepared to be thought of as "zombie" in that case...

How do you plan on killing someone when you have no weapon and they have lots, feel lucky much?

build up a store of seeds and get some chickens and you'll be relatively ok

The problem with hoarding is you eventually run out of supplies and have to face an inhospitable world where you will only be taken in if you have something valuable to contribute, which you likely cannot bring with you when you set out from your initial refuge.

Lines of communication have probably been down for some time and you don't know where to head for safety, besides the boards survival map ( need to make a hard copy of that for the supply bunker). Best bet is probably a mix of half supply hoarding and half survival skills, to be thoroughly prepared. Also best not to keep all your supplies in the one location and not all medicines etc, in the one location. Redundancies will save your life.
