Hi, I got married in Feb 2012 and would like to know whether I am entitled to tax refund for year of marriage? I paid just over 1600 in tax last year.
My spouse had no income last year and continues to be unemployed this year.

If you send in a copy of your marriage cert to your local district with your wife's PPS number and state that you want to be jointly assessed from the date you were married they will recalculate your liability and issue a refund where appropriate.

Thanks Mr. Incognito. I have already sent my marriage cert to Revenue and applied for joint assessment.
    According to Revenue:
For tax purposes, both spouses or civil partners continue to be taxed as two single persons in the year of marriage or civil partnership was registered. However, if the tax you pay as two single persons in that year is greater than the tax which would be payable if taxed as a couple in a marriage or civil partnership, a refund of the difference can be claimed

This year we are taxed as a couple, and because of higher tax credit I don't pay any tax, my wife is unemployed.
Does this mean I can get all tax back from last year, as the amount of tax we paid last year (as singles) is higher than this year (as couple)?

No. As the figures this year may not be the same as the year before and it depends what date you got married.

If you got married in June you will assume half her credits. In Dec 1/12th etc.

It is calculated from the date of marriage. Expect nothing and perhaps you may be pleasantly surprised

    Thanks again.
Will visit Revenue when I get a chance to claim tax refund.

    Hi guys,

I got married in November 2015 and i registered myself and my wife as a Joint Assessment only in May 2016.

I'e got already a refund of November and December 2015 so my question is: will I get a refund of taxes for the period January/May 2016 through a P21?

    Many thanks
