Employment Law Info Needed

I am looking for some information on employment law, or even a direction to go in to find info.

Ok, I have been working for the same company for the past 8 years. My most recent contacted ended about 6 months ago, I have continued to work usual hours, etc., and as of yet have had no official contact from HR etc., regarding the end of contract. I have heard through the grapevine that my contract isn't being renewed but as I said have yet to be told anything officially. Have asked my manager about it and something about HR will be in contact was mumbled, but so far, nothing.

Anyway, at some point I remember something about becoming entitled to hours/work if you work those hours over a specific time period (number of years), regardless of the existence of a contract or not. Is this the case?
For obvious reasons, I really don't want to be unemployed.
