    Before the game went professional Leicester (and Bath I think) used letters instead of numbers on the backs of their jerseys.

    They now have the letters each position it corresponded to on that jersey.

    Back in the day, Leicester used to identify their players with letters on the back of the jersey as opposed to numbers.

    So:
    A=1
    B=2
    C=3

    and so on...

    It's the old positioning system that was used in rugby. Mostly in England up until professionalism. Maybe in Scotland and Wales, I'm not sure, but it was a club thing more than an international thing as far as I recall. (feels old)

    Bath didnt use a number 13.

    Centres were 12 and 14, wings 11 and 15, full back 16.

    Bristol used letters as well as indeed did some international teams such as Wales in the pre-war era. Numbers were thought to smack of professionalism!

    The Welsh used it originally but it died out. Leicester had it also traditionally and, pre professionalism, as alluded to above, teams didn't have a 13. Leicester were the most famous though and none more famous that the front rown of ABC which was Rowntree, Cockerill and Garforth was legendary.

    Whilst the lettering system is now disallowed within sanctioned games, the Tigers still employ it for their pre-season games.

    Working in England in the early 70's I wore the D jersey for Acklam Rugby Club in Middlesbrough.

    *gently rocks rocking chair whilst wistfully thinking of his youth*
