Looking to go to Italy next year. we are hoping to travel around and see a good few places for about 2/3 weeks.

could anyone recommend a good place that we can hire a car for a bit and maybe a good way to find hotels along the way.

Why not just pick the car up at the airport?
Hertz or the like. You can book in advance.
Most large town/cities will have a Hertz office where you can pick up/drop off a car.
Prepare yourself for the craziness that is the Italian driver. :)

As for the hotels, I normally choose where I'm going to stay during any given night and then just search the net for places in the area.
TripAdvisor can be useful for recommendations if enough people have commented on a place.

    www.moneysupermarket.com

Compares them all and gives you the best price.

For Hotels just get the kayak app for Android and book as you go.

Worldmate is also an excellent app for storing/planning/booking your trip (Available for Android/iPhone)

Just get a PAYG data card on TIM or one of the other networks.

Driving in Italy is grand no worse than other European countries, although it may be a slight issue having the steering wheel on the other side for you.
