It's usually cheaper online than mortar shops.
If ebay seller has good feedback, the tyres are of good brand and you have some local guy to fit them I see no reason to not buy from ebay.
On the other hand there's many online tyre shops like eirtyres, blackcircles etc.

Choose a brand and a size and compare the various places?

Ebay can be cheaper. a lot of variables though. They could be old stock (so check the date of manufacture on the sidewall to make sure they aren't gone off). They could be rethreads/remoulds (look for small print), they might be part worn/used tyres (check the small print).

Worst of all they could be cheap, nasty, crappy Chinese tyres that are on the whole fairly dangerous.

I'm here in Australia and have been looking for a while for tyre replacements. There are a few fairly big reputable shops around that have eBay stores with some great deals, new stock, good tyres with savings of up to $500 for a set of 4 tyres for a Landcruiser.
Some eBay sellers with rethreads for $60-80 a tyre...no thanks.

I ended up getting 5 brand new tyres (deceased estate) for 50% cost of them new. It took some time to find them and I wasn't in a hurry.

If you're unsure on brand names....google them. If google doesn't come up with many/any good reviews. Steer clear as they are probably the cheap, dangerous Chinese tyres.
