Directional tyre on wrong side

    Hi,

I had my nct yesterday and was pointed out to me that I had a directional tyre on the wrong way. It was on the passenger side and should have been on driver said. Man in nct said just to switch them around, but after googling I read that it could be dangerous to switch and it could cause tyre to blow out? Is this true or is it ok to put the tyre on the driver side now?

    Thanks

Put it this way it is safer to have them the right way around..can't imagine it causing any problems..is there matching tyres on the front(is the drivers side wrong direction to

The driver side tyre is a non directional one, had about a month of trouble last summer with tyres so think that's when the directional one appeared, was a bit naive and assumed they were always the same being put on

I can't find the site now, will keep searching but the meaning I took from it was that if directional tyres are on the wrong way they grow accustomed to going that direction and then if they are switched around it can cause interior friction and make the tyre blow out?? Really don't have a clue if that makes any sense

It will not blow out or anything. At worst it'll have less grip in wet.
I drove with tyres on the wrong way when figuring out an issue I had with tyre noise. During dry, damp and wet - nothing happened.

The reason tyres have direction is that the grooves/tracks are designed to push away water as fast as possible so the car doesn't aquaplan.
Having the tyre on the wrong way means the tyre can't perform as well is all.

It would only be in extreme cases that a tyre could blow out if its position on the car is changed. It would normally be if the tyre is a cheap, poor quality tyre or if the cars alignment is off or if the tyre has had excess pressure put on one side of it for long periods of time(camber etc). Swapping the tyre then changes the loading on the tyre carcass and can cause the tyre to distort and blow out.

Its a rare case though. For the most part it would be fine swapping the tyre around. However, even when you do this, you'll still have badly mismatched tyres on the front of your car.
