Any one recommend a fertilizer spreader, looking for one just for grass and was thinking wag tail as could spread seed as well with it.

Was looking at few today from vicon's to others that claim to have vicon main parts. Any to watch out for or much difference?

If you're going for a wagtail buy an Anfer. They have an oil immersed gearbox and have none of the bearing problems associated with the Vicon type machine.

Sorry to hijack thread , can the amazone spread ground lime ?.Thinking of buying one it would be handy to be able to spread a bit of lime instead of waiting an contractors.

Don't like wagtails myself need very calm weather for seeding with one and even then its a hit and a miss!! As for amazone steer clear have had a few of them the llast a zam type special tool needed for calibrating only the dealer has at least near us anyhow!! I have changed to a sulky find it great easy set up very accurate and can be calbritated in five minutes!! Never heard of a fertliser spreader that would spread ground lime!!

100hp landini wouldn't be doing much work hard to justify a spinner

Have being using wag tail "vicon" sowers for over twenty years got sick of having to change bearings in them and the hopper size so bought a new sulky this spring, would never go back to a wag tail now holds 3 bags so not running the roads burning fuel ect.Had intended buying a amazon but the standard sulky would have a higher spec than the ZAM-amazon s worth checking out!!!

Depends on farm to farm, in your case it sounds as if the new sulky was worth it, but we still have an old vicon wagtail here, have thrown in one set of bearings into it in the last 5yrs, it is kept greased up very regularly in fairness, we are all on the one block of land so not much diesel wasted back and forward, I let my dad off spreading with it on the old 2wd tractor, which sips diesel, 1/2ton bag is the most you want to put behind that tractor, If I got a bigger spreader and had to put it on the loader tractor then I wouldnt be able to use the loader to fill it.

Only reason I'd consider going with something newer is if it was more accurate and it saved us fertilizer, which is expensive, however spreading a slight bit extra fertilizer is surely rarely a bad thing?, once it all grows more grass then its good!

My dad use to spread grass seed with it, but I think grass seed is too expensive nowadays to waste throwing it on the ground as such, better to get the contractor to do it right with a drill.

Have a Vicon here since 1995, never put a new set of bearings in it but four years ago it did blow up and we put a complete new bottom in it as the wishbone disintegrated.

At the time, we were told it was the best maintained Vicon spreader he saw

We sow grass seed and forage rape with ours as well and our farm is nearly half and half tillage and grass.

Only flaw is the 400kg hopper but if I could get a larger spreader in need of repair in the morning I would and make one good one from the two. Our Ford 3600 might be under pressure then :D

For a twin disc, I'd only consider two, a Rauch or Bogballe but the Bogballe is not ideal for spreading a small bit at a time - e.g. 100kgs.

sorry for hijack, I have an old amozone twin disk (5 bag) spreader, both side doors are open same amount but its spreading faster and better on one side, discs seem to be spinning at same rate

its an ancient thing but does my job, thinking of changing this year

our first vicon was my fathers an old 5 bag sower never gave any bother but then i bought a 500kg "vari" spread one ok ish but the vari part of it was a brat of a thing ya could get 3 seasons out of it without repair and it could break down a couple of times the next year but the tons going through it was going up every year. But the disc spreads so much wider than the wag tails dont know why i did not change to one years ago..

Something wrong if you have to change the bearings often. Most of the bearings you get in the motor factors are rubbish. SKF or NSK are the brands of quality.

BTW, I had the same problem with travelling back and forth.. easily solved for long runs.... put a ball hitch in the towing lug. Load up the car trailer with manure and hitch them all together. Tractor, Spreader and trailer.

You get some looks from the locals, but tis highly effective.

I bought an Abbey wagtail spreader about 15 years ago (700kgs) as replacement to an Amazone twin spreader. Took a while to get used to it, but would recommend it no problems, very accurrate

often thought a trailer with a long draw bar that would go under the mounted fert spinner with a PAL finger type crane powered from tractor hydralics would be a handy outfit

I don't think I was 100% clear. There is a towing lug on the vicons you can put a ball into.

You can see the holes on the image above. Bolt in the towing ball. set the height for the trailer and away you go. Just don't over do the weight.

ya i knew what you ment first time alright but as you pointed out weight of a trailer on the frame of a fert spinner would be an issue. A pellet of CAN alone would be 2ton plus trailer weight then dynamic's weight becomes an issue where you can at least double the laiden weight to allow for stoping etc. Can't see the the fram of that vicon standing up to near 5ton weight!

But I do get your point... handy setup for a couple of 50kg bags worth.
