I'm up to lesson 31 now (out of 36) in Learning Irish. It's taken me well over a year of home study on my own. Still can't say anything, mainly because it's not a 'conversation' course and anyway I don't have anyone to talk to! However, that's OK, I'm doing this as a cultural interest and I get enormous satisfaction out of reading and understanding simple books and articles.
I think it's an excellent book. But it depends what you want to do and whether you like to study grammar or not. It is very grammar-based and it will give you a thorough grounding in the language.
I hasten to add that it's not a grammar book in the same style as the Christian Brothers Irish Grammar! Along with the grammar and related exercises in every chapter you get an article to read which illustrates the vocab and grammar points of that lesson. Obviously these articles get more difficult and complex as you go along, but they really help you see if you've understood everything before moving on.
If your lady is interested more in conversing then it's probably not the best book for her, unless used with a conversation course too.

You can't really go too far wrong with Buntús Cainte, you can get the book and CD for a tenner.

Actually just found this, €25 for all 3 books and CD's
