    Good morning everybody.
I need an advice. I bought an 05 Astra cdti in N.I., transfer my full comp insurance on it. Was asked how much is worth, said €4k. After not even 48h was stopped by costumes. They gave me a warning, and I was told that have 30 days to pay VRT. On the spot I rang and made an appointment. I`ve been told to keep my documents with me all the time just in case gards or other customs stop me. Few days later car has been STOLEN:mad:. I reported to gards and axa. Axa send a man to get all the details. I was asked for a log book, and here all the fun starts. Log book was in the car:(:(. Now axa says they wont pay until i bring them a log book. I have only a photo copy of it,with the date of purchase and both signatures, they said its not enough. I also sad i have a sort of a document wrote by previous owner saying that he sold that car to me with dates and both signatures, and a MOT cert.
    Could somebody please help me?
    What should i do now?
Do they (axa) have the right to do it?
    Thank you.

While slightly different I had a car stolen while with axa and again the log book was in the car. They had no issue with that.

It may have something to do with the fact they can't transfer the ownership to themselves if it is recovered after a they pay out on it as it has been exported to Ireland but not registered here.

Can you contact the previous owner and get the log book reissued to you, with their help?

Thanks for reply guys. I rang previous owner, asked him to get a log book:D. Just wondering, if the car is reported stolen in ireland will NI have some information about it?

Leaving logbook in the car is just purely stupid.

Hope the replacement for which previous owner applied will sort your case.

However whoever stole your car holds a logbook at the moment, so he can actually go and register this car in his name legally.
If they ask questions, he can always say that he bought the car off you, and in general it's going to be your word against his.

No they can't. Just because a car is stolen with paperwork doesn't mean it's not stolen.

The thief is unlikely to go registering it to themselves ss if its flagged, they are basically giving themselves up. More likely to sell it on cheap pretending to be small time dealer.
