Dodgy Private Car Clampers

I live in the IFSC and we have alot of loading bays that are managed by dodgy private car clamping companies .

Anyway I popped into the spar which has what looked like a layby right on the front door off Georges Square , there were no legible markings and I assumed it was to let me park there for literally 2 mins to get some stuff from the place, and there were other cars parked there.

Thankfully a cabbie told me I was about to get clamped, so I ran out to the car, hopped in jammmed it into reverse and shot off while they were taking the photo right before they would have clamped it, they the yelled at me saying "I cant get away that easy" , what can they do? I assume private companies cant access owner records, also the sign warning clamping (1/2 way down the road) is vandalized with graffiti.

Is there anything they can do about it? I am the kind of guy who would probably remove a car clamp myself with some bolt cutters !

I did take a photo of the sign on my phone, and the lack of markings incase they try anything

You got away with it, They cant/wont come after you - They didn't clamp your car they were about to so your fine
Probably better to not park there again though.

If anyone but the city council clamps me I would cut off the clamp doing as little damage as possible. hold onto their clamp and charge them a release fee and storage for every day I have it.

Why would you think a layby permits you to park in it "for literally 2 minutes". It's either a parking space or it's not.

Also, what is "dodgy" about the clampers?

There was nothing to say it wasn't a parking place, there was apparantly signs on the tarmac but they were worn and illegible, and there was 1 vandalized sign that was pointed out 1/2 way down the road.

The fact they got someone else, and wanted cash only

Everything, they are unregulated. They demand payment of their charges before they remove the clamp because its the only way they can get paid. They are bullys.

Was the IFSC not taken in charge by the Council recently?

What's the legal position WRT private clampers? I think I read somewhere that it just needs a test case to prove that they can or can't operate the way they do but that whenever a case gets close to trial the companies always settle.

You can just remove the clamp but be careful not to damage it or they could claim damages. Private clamping is irrelevant.

what do you mean by this? If it is a private company.? What if a private company is acting for say a hospital? can you remove it then and how does one remove a clamp?
