i got an electrician to fit a new extractor fan in the bathroom but the one he installed was smaller. he said i should fill the hole around it. basically I'm useless at DIY but I'm going to give this a go, from googling it, i was thinking Polycel foam could be the answer. here is a picture of the hole, any advice is welcome??

Foam is probably the handiest solution, but wont leave a perfect finish. You could use a filler after it set if you wanted a smoother finish.

If you use foam, just do a little at a time. It will keep expanding for several minutes. Once its completely hard its easier to cut then without mess.

Personally I wouldn't use foam, it will drip down from it and be a nightmare to remove on certain surfaces....just get some polyfiller and build it up gradually...sand down and touch up.

Pack it out with polyfiller. One product and simple.

Get a small tub of Red Devil onetime, its a very fine light filler and will easily fill the hole without sagging or mess. Use a small filling knife for the job.

he said i should fill the hole around it.

    not good enough
if he was any good he should have filled it for you
he should have had some filler with him(replacing sockets and switches some plaster always falls out)
    get him back
you called an expert to do the job,you shouldnt have to tidy his work

    OMG, what a sh1te job!

    Electrician should have replaced like-for-like.

That's not a proper job at all. He left you with a half-finished project, and he did the easy bit!

Suggest you get a same-size replacement fitted.

That is the work of a cowboy not a tradesman.

You will prob need to get into the attic and put a small strip of plasterboard over the hole and secure in place. This will help when you fill the hole from below with a good filler in few stages to build it up to final finish.

    Remove fan.

150 x 150mm square piece of plasterboard bonded on over exiting plasterboard ceiling (access from attic above to do this).

Go into bathroom and reskim that hole with some bonding/one coat filler.

Smooth it out with a wet trowel and leave to set

Get a holesaw of the same diameter as the fan outlet and drill new hole through freshly skimmed area.

    Install fan and ducting.

    Lick of white paint.

Job done for good and you would never know the difference either.

    yeah
theres nothing worse than getting a tradesman in and then having to repair, tidy up after him

we all run into problems, but what defines a good tradesman over a bad one is how the problem is overcome

think the op should get him back to fill the hole or as others have said,to put a bigger fan in
