Camping in france - May or September

We are hoping to take our first family camping trip to france this summer.
2 parents, 2 babies (1 & 2.5 years) in a camper van for two weeks.

Due to various reasons (work, cost, harvest etc) June/July & August are out.
That leaves mid May or mid September.

On the plus side we miss the crowds and the ferries are cheap but my worry is will the weather be ok and will the camp sites be open?

We are easy re destination but probably head down the west coast a bit anyway.

    Any thoughts or recommendations?
If you had to pick one month, which would you go for?

September. The weather in May can be very iffy regardless of location, September tends to be more settled.
