    Hey there,

Got part-worn International tyres put on back today, now the noise is unreal in the cab when > 100k on motorway, when slowing down it sounds very like a plane coming in to land!

Bit worried that there was a problem with bearing so rang the guy that fitted them and he says that's normal with the make of tyre and that there is nothing wrong, he offered to switch them no problem but I can't get there for a fortnight.

Just wondering if this sounds right to you? Still bit worried and noise is doing my head in!

Its a vw Passat and size is 215/55/16

    Thanks folks

I had the same problem with my last tyres. It did my head in as I thought it was something else that was wrong. Changed the tyres and no more noise. :)

International make tractors not tyres :pac:

Seriously, where are they made? And how cheap?

Get good tyres, problem solved. Did you research the tyres before buying them or just say 'Give me four of your cheapest tyres'? Good tyres can be bought partworn too.

Part worn you need to pick your tires. Else they'll give ya crap

OP, as of last November new tyres are supposed to carry labels rating their fuel economy, wet grip and sound.

Even if you're buying part worn tyres you should be able to look up websites like eiretyres to see what rating the part worns have.

It sounds like the tyres have gone off, which tyres do when they've been lying outside in the elements. They go hard and brittle and are noisy and more importantly they lose grip. If they sound like a worn bearing then its down to the tyre hardness. Get rid of them as soon as you can and make sure the threads on the next set feel rubbery and reasonably soft.

Cheaper tyre -> harder compound -> more noise/less grip.

Ok, mystery solved I reckon, cheapest tyres possible, flogging the car in not too distant future so trying to keep costs down, hasn't worked on this occasion, can't sell with this noise

Anyone know anything about Tracmax tyres? Need 4 new tyres for my golf and I usually do spend cash on the tyres but I just don't have enough to get what I need. Any help is appreciated

Tracmax = typical budget tyre. Read into that what you will. An alarming amount of people think they are grand but they wouldn't be going anywhere near my car....

Slightly OT, Fifth Gear did a test recently comparing the original tyres supplied with the car (Continental) new tyres (Budget Brand) and some top brand part worn tyres. Surprisingly the Original Continental Tyres performed the worst for braking while the part used were best !! The cheap tyres were better than the Continentals for braking ! Not sure if it's relevant to the thread but certainly something to think about.

Probably cause the new tyre needs to be scruff up a bit. The shiney surface needs to be scrubbed off.

The partworn were winter tires in the wet, they were always going to proform better than std tires in the wet. The lesson should be dont but those stupid eco tires because they haven't got great grip. In ice there abysmal
