Injured runner

    Just wondering if anyone has advice on how I can maintain some level of fitness while I'm injured. I'm waiting for an MRI but my Physio suspects I have a torn meniscus. I'm really disappointed as I was training for my first marathon. I have only been running since august but I don't want to be unfit again! I was running four times a week and was up to about 15 miles on weekend long run. I'm short on time as I have a baby and commute long distance for work. Swimming just takes too long. Any other ideas? Is cycling any good for fitness? Thanks!

    Any exercise that raises your heart rate for a sustained period of time is going to be good for your fitness but don't forget strength and conditioning training. It has the added bonus of reducing injury rates in many if not most people.

    Before you do anything though check your plans with your physio to make sure they're not going to impact your injury - they might also have some ideas on what you can do.

    Cycling is great way to keep fit with a knee injury. Its non impact which is what you need while the injury is being assessed. I am post op for a meniscal and ACL tear and cycled before and after the operation. As above check with the doc or physio before hand.

    Definitely check with your physio before doing anything but the two classics and cycling and swimming. You can also look into aqua jogging if its possible. Did this myself after a back operation and found it pretty good.

    Did some cycling while I had meniscus tear in 2010. Out for 6 months, about another 6 months to regain fitness, then better than ever.
