Mike Hoyland’s Carina E was registered in July 1993, and was built during our Burnaston factory’s early months.
There's a few Carinas on donedeal older than that :D

It's british built Carina E's that they were looking for. Most if all Irish Carina E's were built in Japan up until 1995.

Source of the parts by the looks of it.

A quick google shows how to spot the difference in regards to the VIN number anyway
Toyota said it is asking owners and enthusiasts across the land to check out the VIN numbers of Carina E sedans by looking just below the windscreen wipers, first to make sure that the car was made in the UK and not in Japan. The automaker said that the 17-character code on the vehicle’s identification plate will start with an "S" for Burnaston vehicles, and a "J" for imports

The japanese Carina E's were better built. They had different(superior) back breaks and they had a better designed steering rack which didn't give problems unlike the racks fitted to the british built E's.

Funny you should mention that, my late father had a 95 E which gave a huge amount of trouble which included the rack. Still Toyota went out of their way to look after him at the time. The car also had engineers from the UK factory over to inspect it.

Most uk built E's i've come across have given steering rack trouble and they gave issues with the back breaks as well.

Also UK built cars don't have the brake shoe adjuster on the outside of the drums, the jap built cars have this and makes making a minor adjustment a breeze, in the uk built cars you have to remove the drums to make any adjustments.

Why would they redesign the steering rack to be inferior?

The racks were never made by Toyota. They were made for toyota by outside component companies. both racks were made by too different companies.

The jap steering racks were made in japan by a japanese manufacturer. The UK racks were made in europe by a european manufacturer.

The Japanese manufacturer designed it's rack better and used higher quality materials compared to the eu manufacturer.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

How come the Irish market cars were still Jap built until 1995? It hardly made sense for them to ship a car all the way over from Japan to Ireland when they were also being made at the same time in Derbyshire?

Who cares, compare the amount of english with the amount of jap built carinas left here and you'll find the better cars came to Ireland from japan.

I honestly don't know why. The only reason I can think of is that the UK factory must not of been able to cope with supplying both the UK and Ireland for the first few years of production. Only Toyota knows the real reason though.
