Is your average range ball heavier?

I think I'm noticing that range balls hold their line better in wind and I know they don't seem to go as far. It'd be interesting to see if anyone has the same thoughts regarding the wind. I've noticed this at a few different ranges and apart from one range where half of the balls are lighter that ping ping balls it seems to hold true.

Also on the distance it's much less noticeable on the irons more on the woods.

Range balls are designed to travel a shorter distance - usually 70/80% of a normal ball distance

Nice. So once I hit the course, I'll be driving it 400+ yards.

Up until recently... range balls were quite happy not to hold their line for me, wind or no wind :)

Think the common thinking is that, in general, they would travel 10-15% less and with regards their line.
It's prob safe to assume that they take so much abuse that they wouldn't spin as much either.

There are exceptions obv, like the growing number of balls I get in my local range that have chunks taken out of them... Starting to get annoying now.

Why people don't throw them in the bin is beyond me.
Was up at the range last december, two lads beside me complaining about a few balls that had chunks out of them... the same two lads proceeded to hit the balls onto the range anyway... that'll end the vicious (yes it is vicious) cycle lads :D

I know the range should be responsible for supplying decent balls but all the same, it wouldn't kill people to throw the odd one into the bin

Actually the true distance is whatever distance you hit it on the range multiplied by your handicap.

Now now Mr Low... you'll be heavily outnumbered at the boards outings by us "big hitters"

Just tried working it out on the calculator but I keep getting an error message.

Looks like I'll need a scientific one.

the problem with range balls is compression. They just aren't made of soft stuff.
Try hitting an old soft ball out of your bag. After 90 lumps of muck, it will feel like the clubhead goes clean thro a knob of butter.

If the surfaces are full of cuts and holes, the're probably full of water!.
its probably to do with then lying all day in the wet, getting washed and than sent straight back out again.!
