    Hey,

wondering if anyone has an opinion on the following:

My brother recently moved to Dublin and has left his car behind as he has no need for it (ie genuine reason for sale)

    03 BMW 316 ts hatchback

    Second Owner

    120k miles on the clock

    Timing Belt Done

Out of NCT since turn of the year

Has tasked me with getting it sold for him, my dilemma is should i go about getting it NCT'd or just sell as is.

Was serviced 6 months ago with no issues, may need new tyres at this stage but other then that should be okay.

Few scratches on the body but nothing of note really.

Seen others advertised for a range from €2k - €5k

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    TST

This is a 316 compact so. Watch out when pricing as coupes are worth a lot more than compacts.

An expired NCT will not help it sell unless you let it go dirt cheap. I'd send it through the NCT and then weigh up how much you will need to spend on it to pass. Even if you don't spend money on it at least you have a fail sheet for any buyer.

Has it been changed and do you have a receipt?

People would be interested to know why a chain needed changing ;)
It was hardly nit picking, if I saw an E46 for sale with "timing belt done" in the add I'd presume the owner is either a gnome or dishonest.

It's not exactly nit-picking because to change the chain, it's an engine-out job which is expensive. Also, it brings up the question why it needed to be changed.

Since the car doesn't have a belt and if the chain wasn't changed then it would lead to us thinking that there's lies at play here. Don't forget, you asked the question and we are answering it but we're not fools ;)

Written on top of chassis, timing done as 110k miles. Invoice and receipt in service log book.

Not sure on reason tbh, can check invoice. As i said not my car so not 100% on details.

Sure anyone taking it out with have a mechanic and can look at service book anyway i suppose.

    Cheers.

€250 - timing chain / tensioner replacment including labour & VAT.

Forgive me for formy ignorance, would this affect any potential sale???

Bought an E46 last month... Chain was changed in December 2012 at a cost of €1,100 (have full receipt). Something isn't adding up here.

    Not the same job so?

Just going to get it NCT'd and see what that throws up. Will advertise on the back of those results.

    Thanks for the help!

Who did the 'work' on the timing belt? I'd be talking to them wanting to know how they put a belt on chain driven engine.

could it of being another belt instead of the 'timing belt' ie one that drives the water pump ?
