    05 skoda octavia 1.6 petrol
    230,000 km on it.
    Going well.
I usually service it using the recommended fully synthetic oil.....€50ish for 5 litres. noticed a special offer the other day of 5 litres of semi-synthetic oil for €15.
    It's a huge difference.
So I'm wondering in a car with such mileage and age dose it mater to stick with the fully synthetic oil or will the semi synthetic do?

I'd stick to the good stuff. You can do it cheaper though. You can get 20 litres of quantum 5w40 the vw501 spec in the local main dealer for about 125 euro for example. The longlife 5w30 is 145 euro.

Keep an eye on Lidl. They regularly have fully synthetic for €5 per litre.

Holy cow, 125 for 5 litres of oil?

Surely there is no need to spend that much? Has the difference in engine wear ever been compared/tested to the 20 euro for 5 litres type stuff?

I have ONLY put the 20 euro oil in my avensis for the last 150,000 miles of use, every 9000M without fail, along with a new blueprint filter.

If that was damaging the engine surely there would be evidence by now?

Maybe it's just the fact that I like to do things as cheaply as possible, but it still seems mega steep!

With 230k on the clock, the last thing you want to do is change to a cheaper oil. Fully synthetic and semi synthetic oils have different detergent properties so changing types could actually lead to more issues.

Its with that type of mileage, especially given that you've had no trouble up until now, that you want to be using the best oil you can if you want to continue having a trouble free engine.
