Mix a source recorded with 2 microphones.

Has anyone any tips for mixing a single source that has been recorded with 2 microphones?

Source is a guitar amp miked with an SM58 up close and a Condenser mic a metre or so back.

Is it usual to pan both to the same position or does panning them separately away from each other cause the depth/position in the stereo field to change?

Anyone with a link to any articles about it is most welcome.

Maybe experiment until it sounds good. I'm assuming the 2 tracks were checked for phase before recording? If not, assess if phase is an issue and use a sample delay plug-in to achieve coherency *before* panning EQing etc. If you pan a dynamic and a condensor hard then you'll hear a strange difference. This can be overcome with some creativity - copying tracks - bussing to subgroups etc.

if you wanna pan for wide gtrs then you need to double them.

with 2 sources i use them for their strong points. ie: filter the out the mids on mic A and filter out the highs and lows on mic B.

it all depends on what the mic's strengths and weaknesses are on a given source.
