I need a recommendation for a "Good" Auto Electrican. Sister in-laws car is running around 18v. Had some one already look at it, changed alternator still running too high. Ford Street Ka, 1.6. Need someone around Celbridge / Lucan / Clondalkin area.

    Is the alternator light on?
Was it a new or reconditioned alternator?

Regardless if it's still overcharging the 2nd alternator is faulty too imo.

Not sure, the garage that done the work left half the cables loose  , took it to some one we know, but cause it is a small car, bumper needs to be removed to get at alternator, he didn't want to know. He won't be getting my business anymore. I can get a mechanic to change the alternator, but should there be other issues, she doesn't want to be moving the car from billy to jack.

Can't see it being anything but the alternator tbh, can understand why the guy you brought it to didn't want to touch it, fixing someone else's mess is less than appealing.

Do you mean the alternator light doesn't come on at all now due to wires not being connected?

@roverjames In fairness he did say it was because the car was small and a nightmare to get at, nothing about the unconnected cables, infact I think he may have reconnected these. I am not sure what the problem is, the car broke down on the M50 Monday morning and thsi is what she has been told. I did speak to some one with a similar problem, the alternator was changed, still produced more volts than required, turned out to be some dodgy cable from alternator to battery.

@Martinr5232 Me and electrics don't mix very well. Thanks anyway.

Talk to Carl in sound decision in clondalkin. He's pretty good with stuff like this.

Sounds like the smart charge system is gone a bit balmy, as mentioned by martin back along. From looking at previous threads on this, there is a plug you can disconnect so that the alternator just does normal alternator stuff ~14V rather than listening to the ECU and overvolting.

I am not a mechanic, or an auto spark, but it's possible your alternator is fine but something else is setting a flag to tell it up its voltage. The smart charge system used by Fords seems to be akin to Voodoo or witchcraft for some people working on cars...

Dont know the ford at all but on mine the Engine management computer controls the charging voltage.
Im guessing the alternator is ok if its able to output its max voltage. 18v
So must be computer or connections.

There's a lad called Richie based in Blanchardstown on main street, he was recommended to me about 4 years ago and I always recommend him. It's not within the area you are looking for someone but if you don't get sorted he's be well worth a shout

That's everyone. The car is with someone in Clondalkin.
