Are we talking about a certain Wexford based member?

Btw, I'm not in milk, but think that a board member or two with dissenting voices may be no harm to keep things honest.

These guys came out publicly about the mistake it was to develop GII yet they have no problem sitting on the self same board, the mind boggles. If they have such deep reservations they should have done tthe honorable and resign. I am all for the cut and thrust of frank debate within the board room but once a decision is made it's a board decision. No board member should be so arrogant as to dissent once outside either a board member or not

these board members have been democratically elected back on to the co-op board... so clearly the grass roots in their areas are very appreciative of their questioning of gii(L)... the decisions u refer to were ultimately made BY the shareholders ON the boards reccomendations so the rebels were an integral part to the debate... long may they continue to question and long may they continue to highlight any misgivings they have...

As far as I can remember, john Murphy did state he had no intention of leaving if last years votes went against his view and said he would accept the members decision.
I'd agree board member contrarian views are a good thing for ensuring proper debate before a decision.

By the way, when are those spin out shares being issued?
They said last year it would take untill march, which is in just 2 weeks and I haven't had any communication at all on them.
Is there a delay? And if so why?

i made that point before. there should be a cap on how many years a board member can serve. dont want them getting too comfortable

Three terms max and then only if one of the terms is chairing the board. All elections for the board should take place around 2 years in advance of when the person was going to take up their position and the intervening two years should be spent on a full time business management degree/diploma course. No-one should be eligible to go for election unless thephysical and financial performance figures for their own farm were in the top 1% nationally. No more area representation, the best people should be put in regardless what part of the catchment area they are from.

All farmer directors should receive a proper renumeration package which allows them to pay someone else to manage their farm on at least a day-to-day basis while they are working as a director of Glanbia. It should be a condition of their employment that they employ extra staff having taken up their position as a director of Glanbia. While I'm ranting the "council" should be disbanded and all records of it's existence destroyed so we will never have to explain to future generations how we allowed such a useless quango to exist for more than 15 years.

I sure do but unlike world peace and an end to poverty on this issue at least nominally I have a say and some hope of having an influence. Is your only criticism of my points that they are aspirational?

Ah I agree with you.But having served on a board myself, you run up against the fact that people don't want the job, even if it is paid well.
That's one of the biggest hurdles, apathy and people who otherwise would be right candidates picking time spent with family and friends over board membership.

If they are being properly paid if in fact it's made a condition of their tenure that they hire someone to replace them in their own business while they are on the board the issue of free time should be dealt with. The apathy and ambivalance that I can see is because good people don't want to waste their time being frustrated by conservative people of lesser ability. If they knew the calibre of candidate was improving the apathy might be reduced.
