It should be on the Co2 motor tax system, think they were in tax band A or B. You can check the different rates on motortax.ie.

Weird one. When we imported the i30 (march 2008) I assumed that it was co2 rates, so after importing and before vrting I called the tax office, who told me it was cc based, called the vro who said cc, person in the nct said cc after the assessment.
At the tax office when taxing it, it was on co2 rates.

From what I remember it is the lower of the 2. SIMI kicked up cause sales where dropping big time.

I know if you had a 08 car, reg pre July it was put onto the cheapest one.

If imports are on the cheapest, that would go along with what they did for Irish reg cars, but i'm not too sure if it's the case....

January to June Irish cars on the cc system got put on the lower rate after July.

It was then said that imports didn't qualify for that (contrary to what I had always thought) then we got on the lower rate anyway

That means people who work for those institutions didn't have a clue.

I'm actually surprised motortax people did know.

In reality for car from first half od 2008, tax which applies is the cheaper one - whether it's CO2 or CC.

    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/2012/en/act/pub/0010/print.html
    (g) where a vehicle was registered outside of the State during the period beginning on 1 January 2008 and ending on 30 June 2008 and is subsequently registered in the State on or after 1 January 2008 under section 131 of the Finance Act 1992 as a category A vehicle or a category M1 vehicle, as the case may be, and which has an identification mark assigned by the Revenue Commissioners under section 131 (5) of the Finance Act 1992 which signifies that the vehicle was first brought into use during the year 2008, then, notwithstanding any other provision of this paragraph, the rate of duty as respects that vehicle for licences taken out on or after 1 July 2008 for periods beginning on or after that date shall be chargeable at the lower of the rates of duty for the vehicle under subparagraph (d) or (e).

To be fair, the motor tax person just went with what was on the screen.

That paragraph you quoted is pretty conclusive.

Was pretty panicking for those few days though!

So say for instance I took a notion to import a May-08 Registered Evo X, I would pay 640 pa instead of 2.5k pa?
    Nice :)

Is Evo X not 2 litre engine, so it would be 710, not 640.
