Career/life path trouble

    howdee,

I am about to go abroad for an interview for a job which could start in a month or so, assuming I get it. There's a good chance I will. However it's a line of work I have been in for the last 5 years, and it's not something I want to be doing in 10 years time for sure.
On the one hand, I need to get a job, so the money would be good across the water. On the other hand, I find it very hard to get motivated about the interview, or about being "enthusiastic" or "passionate" about the job.

I always felt that to make a move such as this, that it would be for the "dream job". Now the dream job doesn't exist for 99% of people, but I would love to be doing something I really like, as opposed to having to do a job because I need the money. But I'm hitting 36 at this stage so am running out of options.

My passion is music, which is best kept as a side thing, as that industry is so fickle, you can't rely on it for full time work most of the time. So, I'm realistic about that. Any jobs that I could retrain for related to music, are as hard to get into as it is to "make it" in music. So, again, I am realistic about that too.

I really do not know what I want to do, as a day job. I have no idea. I fear that this is my lot, being in a job I don't like just to make money. I know I could do alright at it, and make a few quid, and it would be nice to finally save a few quid, but I feel I have boxed myself in, and this is my lot.........

I know lots of people say most people are in jobs they don't really like, but have to do it for the money, but I am of the feeling that feck it, life is too short, why not do your best to do something you really want to do in your life. I will admit I haven't made those efforts over the years so only have myself to blame....

You are asking a bit of an impossible question OP. If you had some idea of what you wanted to do that would be a different situation, but since you do not know yourself its a bit difficult for other people to offer advice.

Maybe you should take the job if you are offered it, and use your spare time to research possibilities of what you might want to do. Maybe you could train part time. Being 36 is not important, there is still time to figure out what you want to do - I turned 50 in college and have just retired from a job I loved. Lots of other people will tell you the same thing.

If you are sitting here out of work (?) and bored, or even in work and bored then you might as well make the move to somewhere else, even if you are doing a similar job, at least it will be a change of scenery.

Well whatever you do don't give up on the music, even if it is just a side thing. Do you write your own songs? Play in a band? With t'internet it's very easy to get your music out there- pop it up on YouTube/bandcamp/etc. You never know what might come of it.

Yes, I suppose the expression "when you are in a job, you get a job". I'm working freelance, but it's gone to pot, so I really would like to get back into the full time world, as I no longer have to go chasing money etc.

As far as music goes, I would be going to the perfect city in England to get involved in music. So from that point of view, it's a good thing.

Yeah, I think I need to do some research once I secure a job, whether that be in Ireland or elsewhere. I am even trying to think how I could use what I do in a musical environment.

My hobby is my real passion. That's the problem....

I know the feeling, as I have posted elsewhere on this forum my hobby (creative writing) is what I want to make a career of. Like music, very very hard to make a living off.

I am thinking of going into teaching purely because the hours will allow me to do more writing that other jobs.

It's good to think about how you can use music and your career together, it's very positive that you're thinking outside the box. I don't really have any advice as such, it's a bit of a quandary as to how much you are willing to compromise, but just to let you know you're not alone :)
