    Hi all

My mechanic told me that my two front pads needed replacing but would need doing after NCT as they wouldn't bed in in time as NCT was that day.

The car passed through NCT no question regarding brake pads.

How much life would my pads have left in them?

Your mechanic will be able to answer this better than us as we haven't had the benefit of seeing the wear on them pads over the Internet .

The brake pad material is normally 1cm thick when new
Take off your wheel and look at the pad if its 1-2mm thin then replace them.

Your mechanic is correct that they need time to bed in. The old pads could still have a small bit left in them so would of been good enough to pass an nct.

In general brake pads work 100% correctly until they are completely gone.
Once friction material is gone and you start having metal-metal, braking force will decrease and you will automatically start destroying your brake discs.

So generally even if there is only 1 day of driving left on your brake pads, they could easily pass NCT.

About 3.5 day or 50 brakings, only joking.

If the mechanic think they need changing they probably do, unless he's with some Pitstop or Fastfit outfit. They may still be within specs for NCT but why chance it.

I don't think brake pads are inspected on NCT.
Especially if there are steel wheel, NCT tester practically has no possibility to see how much of them is left.

Examine the mechanical components of the brakes which can be seen without dismantling

    8. Excessively worn, contaminated, incorrectly adjusted brake linings or pads.

    2. Where no facility is provided for inspection of brake shoes/pads, item (8) above will not apply

In general unless there are alloys with big spaces, and especially if car has steel wheels, there is no chance to see brakepads on most vehicles.

You can see them, even with most steel wheels all it takes is a torch and good eyesight. :-)

Whenever you'd be passing by through Mayo give a buzz.
I'll get you a great torch and a pit so you can show me how much pads I have left on my 01 Fiat Bravo.
