If they cut off the horn and replaced it with a plastic one or fiberglass or carbon fibre  would rhino be saved from extinction ?

But would this change their behaviour ?

Obviously you'd have to have some sort of fasteners so you could easily add on more later to simulate growth - or you could spray on a coating too.

Or should we do a bit of breeding ? - 30% of Elephants have lost thier tusks in the last 3 generations ?

If we were to remove the horns we could stick other more useful things there, like an umbrella or some advertising , which would pay for this, or giant scissors or a satellite dish

so how would you like your rhinos ?

The rhino is killed to get the horn, bit pointless putting a fake horn on a dead one. Could be a good wifi point though ....

You'd want to be damn ugly to give a rhino a horn bro.

I had this thought when on safari last year - is there a way we can "farm" the horns so they're not sold by unscrupulous people. It's a bit out there but it has crossed my mind.

The rhinos are killed in their thousands for their horns and yes the world would be a better place if there weren't whackjobs who thought powdered rhino horns could keep you hard for longer. Sad fact is there are lots of those whackjobs about so maybe if the horns were avialble through the government or some scheme then the poachers wouldn't be earning thousands for them and the rhinos wouldn't die needlessly.
so how would you like your rhinos ?

    I like my rhinos alive!

A mesh network of Rhinos so those mollified Westerners on safari can always upload their snaps from their iPhone to FB to show what a fun life they're having

Give the Rhinos guns and teach them to use them.
Then we'll see who's the baddie

Unfortunately, when wildlife management teams remove horns to try and stop the poachers - it has been tried - the poachers simply kill the rhinos to discredit the policy.

You should ask Rhino before you start giving Rhino's stuff away.

velcro horns - for the rhino in a hurry

Erm, natural selection is already doing this job for you. The rhinos and elephants with smaller horns and tusks are becoming more prevelant as the ones with larger ones are being killed by poachers.

They may evolve with enough pressure to have none.

According to the QI Book of General Ignorance, female rhinos with their horns removed don't look after their babies properly. So there's one reason.

A common misconception. The horns are mostly traded for young arab men as the handles for ceremonial daggers. There is a certain amount that goes to the traditional medicine trade, but not nearly as much as for the dagger handles.

Why don't we all gather up our nail clippings and grind them down and sell them for a knockdown price of 6000 euros a kilo to the stupid arseholes that buy rhino horn dust? Save the rhino and save the economy.

That's it in a nutshell. Those people are basically killing Rhinos for keratin. Similar to how our sea eagles are being poisoned because landowners in certain parts of the country think they abduct sheep or something. The common thread in both is ignorance and the common solution to both should be violence imo.

I spent a few days with a famous safari guide and wildlife expert last year and he claimed there was enough rhino horn sitting in storage to flood the market. Currently no one is allowed to legally sell rhino horn though. He also reckoned harvesting horn from dead rhino was feasible as in there is enough money in it to make it worthwhile tracking dying rhino but again the embargo makes this a non starter at the moment.

He told a mad story on the subject..
He had been consulted by an African government who wanted to set up a task force to protect their rhino with armed guards. Some shadowy government types listened to his ideas but immediately suggested an easier solution to rhino poaching....kill all the rhino! They were deadly serious as well!!
