First HTPC - a few questions

Got a rather belated large box from Santa recently and am hoping to set up my first HTPC and proper home network in the coming days. Main equipment will be a Synology DS713+ NAS wired via ethernet to an Intel NUC (i3/8GB/256GB mSATA) under / behind the TV. I intend ripping CD/DVDs etc from the HTPC to the NAS plus some BT, NZB etc and watching content on the TV attached to the NAS, as well as a laptop and/or tablet (WLAN). Have never had a HTPC before so have a few novice questions. Please move to a previous thread if it would be more suitable there.

    1. I'd like to set up the NUC to have a dual boot function. Kids and technophobe wife will be using it so I'd like it to boot straight to a media player when switched on. Judging from previous threads, this will likely be XBMCuntu or Open Elec. However, I'd also like the option to boot to Windows 8 on a separate partition as required. This would need to be a "hidden" option to avoid 4 year olds getting in there and doing god knows what! I'm hoping this is pretty easy to set up? I'd also like to set up the files such that there is a 'family' folder with content suitable for kids that would be the default option on logon - I'm guessing this is something to be found in the NAS instructions though!

    2. What media player to use? I know it's a bit of an unanswerable question but the general preference here seems to be for XBMC. However, the Synology NAS has a native Plex app available for it so this may be more intuitive? And I've heard Windows Media Center is actually pretty decent for live TV, an option I'd prefer to have, but not top of the priority list.

    Thanks in advance!
