Firstly if this is not allowed then mods by all means delete it.

Almost every post where somebody has an issue with a car they bought or is looking to buy has the reply - "have your mechanic look at it before you buy"

Thing is not everyone has a reliable mechanic and even less who are willing to leave their base to go look at a car.

Maybe it would be handy to have a list of boards contacts and locations that can be used?

Hi you could always use the likes of the AA

Only trouble is that they're quite pricey, especially if the car isn't worth that much.

As for the idea behind the thread, great in theory, but it's open to people just spamming the forum. Creating a thread asking for suggestions and asking for recommendations to be PMed is the best way imo.

Speaking of that, does anyone have the number for Conrad Trill, Rahoon? Alfa mechanic in Galway.

On topic, if the seller objects to you coming to take the car to a garage for a check then s/he isn't worth it.
Make an appointment at a local garage and take car there instead of having the mechanic call out (more pricey and mech cannot hoist car up to check underneath anyway).

The costlier the car, the bigger the investment to have it checked out.

Then again, it depends on your tech skill and the value of the car.
I find that most model cars will have a few weak spots, if I check for those in particular and the general condition then I'm often happy out.
My biggest pre-purchase expense when buying car is the cartell report :D

The seller mightn't want to take time off work to accompany the car and may not want to let it out of their sight :)

That does makes sense but if they expect you to put a few grand down they need to accommodate you somehow.

In a perfect world for the seller someone shows up, hands over the dosh without barganing and drives away. Never to been seen again :D

Generally speaking for every person wanting to bring a car to a mechanic to get it checked out there's another who doesn't need to / is too tight to :) (for most run of the mill cars imo).
