Timing belt change 92000 fiesta?

    Hi- 92000 on ford fiesta- do I need to bring it to main dealer- a mechanic friend looked at it and said because needed special tools would have to go to main dealer- it is very expensive- is that the case, also do we need to do water pump also? thanks so much

    Lots of cars require special tools when changing timing belts, however that doesn't mean it will cost a lot or that you have to go to a main dealer.

    What year is it and what engine is in it?

    Many garages will be able to do this - there are some ford specialists too, the likes of blackchurch motors as an example

    There is no need to bring it to a dealer at all. Any decent mechanic/garage would have the locking tools for a Ford engine.

    Brought mine to the main dealer and it was €350 for the belt alone (2000 1.25 zetec). Thing is they took the opportunity to add many many more jobs onto the total, ended paying almost a grand. They kept ringing me with each smallish job and I kept thinking, "sure the cars taken apart now they might as well do this as well". Big mistake which I've learnt from.

    So basically take it to a smaller mechanic who'll give better value for money. Also make sure they find everything before you give the go ahead to fix.

    its a 00 1.2 zetec- 350 euro is probably what the car is worth at the moment- just need to keep the costs down, had bought the kit before he realised he couldnt do it for me- thanks a million for replies ill try shop about

    You should be able to get the kit you have bought fitted by an independent garage for about €150 I reckon.

    Here you go.....€30 odd for the tools, you could buy them for your mate and get him to change it for free.:P

    Having said that, if he doesn't have them or thinks a Fiesta has to go to a main dealer for a belt change I doubt very much he is a qualified technician.

    Will that kit do for my misses mk 1 focus?
    99 1.6 petrol zetec engine.

    Apparently the crank pulley on it is tapered... No woodruff key even so easy get it wrong.

    Didn't think the kits could be so cheap so forgot about doing the job.

    You should have brought it to a mechanic 3 years ago :D. Have the same car but a year older. Independent mechanic charged a little over €200 for parts and labour. Its the only thing I havent done myself on the car since buying it. Having looked into it a bit online, it seems to be a bit tricker than some other t/b

    Meant to say the water pump is run on the auxiliary belt on this engine (I guess its the 1.25 you have)

    yeah I know they say 10 years but thats mostly a catch-all to cover them on low mileage cars that take an age to get to 100k isn't it?
    In other words wear is a bigger factor in belt failure than deterioration due to age. (IMHO)

    Those kits work on pretty much all 4 cylinder Ford engines.

    The crank pulley isn't tapered and isn't free wheeling, but, like the cam pulleys, has no timing marks. Most modern engines require locking tools as this allows much more precise timing of the engine when changing the belts. IMO engines with locking tools are much easier to work on as, once the tools are used correctly and the correct procedure followed, the engine cannot be timed incorrectly.

    The inner sprocket which the timing belt runs off is not keyed to the crankshaft. Any I have done have been and just double checked autodata to be sure I wasnt loosing it.
