What does he need to do with grass . Dig out or weedkiller. There is a tree in the lawn and some plants so is weedkiller safe

He will also need to put down Mypex or some sort of weed barrier,if he doesnt want weeds comming up all over the place.

Dig out the grass sod,place the mypex over the firm base and install the gravel.

Or you can install gravel honeycomb grids....but they are more expensive than buying Mypex

What did your friend do? I am doing the same and have got weedkiller which will kill off the grass nicely plus am getting extra topsoil to have the center of the garden raised rather than just have it flat which is what every one else does....
Do you have a photo of the finished job?

Just save yourself the time and effort and cover the grass with the weed fabric. It and the stone on top will kill it.
