ABA experience in Ireland these days?

    Hi,

I'm nearly finished my undergraduate Psychology degree and am looking into pursuing an MSc in Applied Behavioural Analysis with the goal of (eventually!) getting into Educational Psychology. I know that for the ABA masters in Galway and Trinity you need to secure work in an ABA setting, I'm just wondering is this work very difficult to come by in today's climate? I've looked at all previous posts but there has been nothing very recent about the current situation for trainee ABA tutors.

I really don't want to waste my time applying for these courses if there is no work to supplement the studies with.

I would really appreciate any help, thanks!

Job oppurtunities in ABA are limited at the moment, like everything! It really depends on how much experience you have. If you are completely new to ABA then there are quite a few voluntary internships available that fulfill the requirements for the Masters courses, I think the course directors in Galway would help you find one or at least point you in the right direction. When you have some experience built up you might be able to get some paid work on home programs

    Hi Trace51.
You seem to a lot a bit about ABA. I just got offered a place on the Galway Msc. I am currently in Australia and am unsure whether to come home to take the course. Basically, I just wanted to know if the work experience is unpaid at the start because I got the impression in the interview that it was paid. Have you done the course and would you say it is a worthwhile course to do with the current job climate in Ireland and the fact that the government are making a lot of cutbacks around the area of special needs? Any info at all is appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Efaol89,

As far as the course in Galway is concerned, I really enjoyed it and felt it was worth doing, I think everyone I know who has done it feels the same. I finished the course in 2011 and when I did it, it was up to us whether we did a placement or not and we had to find our own so I don't know too much about how it works now. Are you on the ABA Ireland facebook page? there are more recent graduates there who could tell you more about that aspect of the course. I know a lot of people start out on unpaid placement, some are lucky and get paid work quickly, if you already have some ABA experience that should help.

The question about jobs is more difficult, there are definitely cut backs and it looks like they are getting worse. However, you will leave the course with a lot of transferable knowledge that you can use outside of ABA based settings. If you are willing to move there is plenty of work in the UK in ABA based settings at the moment, that's what I did!

I'm not sure that is a very helpful answer, if you would like to know anything else just ask, best of luck with your decision!
