Aerlingus to Zurich train from airport to engleberg, Switzerland

Ryanair to memmingen, train to Garmisch, Germany.

Both are pretty decent skiing but of you are after après-ski, they aren't suited. Very quiet.

Place we stayed at was wittelsbach hof. Wasn't that cheap but there was some very nice looking pensions (German b&b). Also plenty of ferienwohnung (holiday home/apartment).

Super helpful tourist office, everyone speaks English. Annoying if you have any German they just answer in English. Give them a ring.

Also get the local bus from airport to train station use the ticket machines to buy a special rate bayern ticket. Don't get that stupid bus to Munich.

    Trains are www.db.de.

Garmisch is not really for beginners either, and not enough for really advanced either. Mostly red and black runs.

Went to Interlaken resort couple of years ago. The accommodation was quite cheap, a group of us stayed in a self-catering chalet. We got shopping everyday from a supermarket in town and made our own dinners/breakfast, and sandwiches for lunch.
The resort itself is expensive though, but if you avoid buying the expensive meals and drinks there, the usual passes are averagely priced.
Flights into Zurich and then a train to Interlaken. Better than paying for expensive transfers. Busses within the resort are then free.

You might get a better response in the winter sports fourm http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=881

Have you been skiing before? If so do you prefer France/Austria/Italy/Switzerland/Andorra?

Plenty of resorts within easy reach of all the main airports in the mountains - to list them all would take all day. You need to look at what you want from a resort. Good for skiers, good for boarders, beginner friendly, snow park, little or no drag lifts, off piste ops, apres, decent proper town not purpose built, transfer time and the list goes on and on. Do a little research on the type of resort you want to go to then maybe you can ask specific questions on that area?

Salzburg is a good airport for DIY. Plenty of resorts within train range (1-1.5 hours) Switzerland is the home of train skiiing but mch pricier.
