I have my iphone coonnected to my E46, and the music is controllable via the steering wheels functions (skip forward/ back tracks).

    Is that what you mean?

I've a cable going from the dash, hidden under the armrest, into the boot, via an amp and it uses the CD changer controls in the boot to loop back to the stereo. Was in the car when I bought it so have had to use adaptor for iphone 3GS (for power, hidden) and for iphone 5 now (new connection).

I think some of the newer Parrot kits can do music via Bluetooth but you lose steering wheel controls then.

Iv'e heard though if you connect the ipod you will loose cd functions ?

    Unfortunately not!
The cable is going under the dash, the armrest/ central console, under rear passenger seat and into the boot via an amp, as the boot is factory wired for a cd changer.

All the controls work as normal, and the iPhone charges perfectly, it just uses the CD Changer function on the stereo, and sterring wheel controls work fine.
I used a Tetrax holder then for the iPhone itself.

There are 2 options, you can get an aftermarket aux in cable which will plug directly into the back of the headunit leaving you with a headphone jack to plug directly into the headphone socket of the iPod/iPhone. You will not have steering wheel controls though.

The other option is the likes of a Dice solution, which will emulate the CD changer connection and give full playback functionality and control of an iPod. This will give you steering wheel controls/text display of playlists on the headunit but at the cost of losing the CD changer in the boot.

The is a bmw cable you can buy that will plug directly into the back of the headunit that will give you an AUX port,
